While both perspectives are true, Honduras has a plethora of fascinating traits. Located in Central America, Honduras’ major language spoken is Spanish, and the capital is Tegucigalpa. Neanderthals/Modern Human Interbreeding Free Essays

In the advent of modern technology, it was found out that the now-extinct species of the Neanderthals do share a common ancestry with the modern human beings. These Neanderthals were proven to be similar in the genetic makeup as compared to the modern human beings. Dating back around 40,000 years ago, the early human beings, Homo sapiens, started moving northward, their migration patterns away from Africa, towards the European and Asian lands. And in a span of 10,000 years, the existence of Neanderthals have started to cease, vanishing from the old places they were situated, then had been isolated into smaller populations. After a few thousand years, they have totally disappeared from the face of the earth. The Neanderthal man was considered as the subspecies of the Homo sapiens, the species where the human beings are classified with. They got their name from the place where the remnants of the first Neanderthal were discovered, in Neanderthal, Germany. It was a valley where the fossils of the Neanderthal were unearthed. It was either classified as Homo sapiens neandertalensis or Homo neandertalensis depending on how scientists view them. Some scientists classify the Neanderthal as its own species, apart from Homo sapiens because of the large number of differences in the anatomy between Neanderthals and human beings (Gianaro). The anatomical structure of the Neanderthal has somewhat explained that they were the primary hominids to have survived and thrived in the harsh conditions of an extremely cold environment. They existed at the time of the glaciations in Europe, wherein they were forced to live and survive in the icy areas of the continent. Their bodies were built for adapting in these cold conditions, like their squat, stocky build which is efficient for maintaining the body temperature under the extremes of the cold environment. They have also developed large powerful muscles in their bodies which have proven to be useful in hunting animals in the cold. This is because there was no abundance of plants that could bear fruits that they can eat, leaving them with meat as their only choice. There bodies showed a lot of difference from that of the Homo sapiens. The H. sapiens contemporary of these Neanderthals which are from Africa and Asia have a relatively smaller skull and brow ridge thickness. With their differences laid, it is clear to see that humans and Neanderthals have a clear distinction, which may or may not have lead in what was speculated by other researchers as the result of interbreeding of the species. Some of these scientists say that even though they were different, they have interbred, which leads us to what the human beings are today. The present human beings have probably been the products or the cross between Neanderthals and the early Homo sapiens. Some say that these answer why the Neanderthals have disappeared, because they have blended in with the early human ancestors (Hsu). One of the studies that lead to the opening of doors for the idea of the Neanderthal interbreeding with early humans was when Neanderthal bones have been analyzed and underwent DNA sequencing. This study was done under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Berkeley National Laboratory and the Joint Genome Institute has yielded astonishing results regarding the similarities of the human and Neanderthal genes. The study arrived at a 99.5% similarity or identity between the two. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that there are evidences of crossbreeding between early human beings and the Neanderthals. The study has opened the door to the understanding that the early Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis shared a common ancestor around 700,000 years back time (Yarris and Rubin). This group of researchers, led by Edward Rubin, the director of the Joint Genome Institute and the Genomics Division of the Berkeley Lab, has achieved to establish the development of the Neanderthal metagenomic library, which was used for analyzing and characterizing more than 65,000 DNA groups which is rooted to Neanderthal ancestry. This is gives a new look at studying the Neanderthals, not only providing new information to the science world, but of further understanding these early hominids. This is essential in finding more about the roots of man, shedding new light to human origin. Erik Trinkaus, a resident anthropologist of the Washington University in St. Louis has published a set of new data analysis regarding the early modern human fossils. This was done along with his Romanian colleagues in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, wherein they have speculated a proof of the transition between Neanderthals and humans. The 30,000 year old bones that were unearthed in Pestera Muierii, a Romanian cave, was said to have resemblances in both Neanderthals and humans (Billings). What these similarities suggest was the possibility that early human beings and Neanderthals may have mated with each other and have successfully produced an offspring. According to Trinkaus, these Muierii fossils were the remnants of the early modern human beings plus some three or four characteristics which resembles that of the Neanderthals. This includes the bulge which is located at the back of the cranium. He said that these could either be a sign of re-evolving from the African ancestors or has acquired them as descendants of those who mated with the Neanderthals. This finding by Trinkaus has been disputed by two other top anthropologists, which are Jeff Scwartz from University of Pittsburgh and Ian Tattersall of the American Museum of Natural History (Billings). According to these anthropologists, the diiference that Trinkaus see as the product of the crossbreeding of the Neanderthals and early modern human beings, were actually the result of normal variation of species. Variations like being chunky or slender, tall or short are most probably the results of species variation rather than interbreeding. These are the things that make them distinct from other species, since no two species are exactly similar with each other. The bulge on the head that Trinkaus claims were actually is the wedge-shaped snouts of the Neanderthal fossils and a depression in the back of their heads, instead of a bulge. These differences in their findings were actually the result of their different attacks on the topic. Trinkaus point of view was more on the aspect of the physical differences that species has undergone. He attributed the size and built of the unearthed specimen as a character of the Neanderthals, while having features the same of that of the early modern human beings. He didn’t consider the possibility of a species variation, like when there are tall and short human beings. Schwartz and Tatersall considered the aspect of this species variation, and have dismissed the findings of Trinkaus. But they have agreed with the similarity which was brought about by the genetic makeup of the Neanderthals and the human beings. Furthermore, their idea dismisses the possibility of interbreeding happening on early modern human beings and the Neanderthals. Though they have almost the same genetic makeup, it doesn’t mean that they are able to interbreed with each other, though they are different species. What the genetic similarity would establish is that they are both coming from the same lineage, the same ancestry, that have branched out hundred of thousand years ago. In the advent of technology, researchers are able to find that Neanderthals are similar to that of the early modern human beings. Because of these they were able to establish that we came from the same ancestry as that of the Neanderthals. There were researches that points out that the present day human beings might have been the result of the interbreeding between the early modern humans and the Neanderthals, but there are also researches that dismisses this findings. We share the same lineage as that of the early hominid Homo neanderthalensis but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we are the result of them interbreeding with early modern human beings. A business presentation structure depends on the subject for presentation, organizational size, and message to be relayed. In this case, I would start with the introduction. In the introduction, the focus would be on: what the company does, the products and services the company offers, the size of the company and the cause of the meeting. The introduction is supposed to be clear, and should be stated succinctly (Khan, 2012. P. 1). Emphasis should quickly on what has prompted the meeting, and how the company has always anticipated expansion. However, this introduction should take the shortest time possible, approximately a minute. The Need/ opportunity/problem On this step, the presentation shall focus on the brief history of the organization. The history shall mention the roles the company has played in its market niche. After that, it should specify why companies today are seeking expansion in the competitive business environment, perhaps through product diversification. Further, the contents of the contract signed, and the advantages of the big client coming to the company to make it competitive should be mentioned. Ideally, this purpose should discuss the purpose of the presentation (Du, 2008. P.23). In this scenario, it would be important to know the audience and build empathy among them. Remember, the two 200 employees for the company would still be crucial to this company even after extending the product line. Therefore, the level of communication should be formal and persuasive so that the employees can understand the importance of the new big client to the growth of the company (Duarte, 2012. P. 21). Perhaps, the big client should be viewed as a solution or opportunity to the firm. Moreover, the approach would help the audience have a broader perspective on the contract and extension of the companys product line. As a result, the employees would be in anticipation of being part and parcel of a growing firm. Also, using a persuasive language when addressing the audience would quickly convince the audience into buying the idea of extending the companys product line. The Solution In the solution section, the presentation shall take its focus on how the range of tablet cases will aid the company to realize its mission and vision. A visual aid would be substantial in this case. For a visual aid to succeed, then the firm should employ a power point presentation. Visual aids would address the following: easy read and understanding of the tablet cases, tying the point the presenter is trying to communicate, and helping the audience to see everything (Sengupta, 2011. P.45). For graphics to be presented, whiteboards can be installed on the boardroom where the presentation is taking place. In this case, superior graphics of the tablet cases should be well-labelled, and followed with the explanation. This would help the audience comprehend the concept of the new tablet cases easily. Besides, the benefits of the value proposition of the customer should also be addressed in this case. Yes, in the need/opportunity/problem section, the problem the tablet cases would solve must have been mentioned. Therefore, this section should try to address the problems outlined in the above, by stating the cost saving, reliability, convenience, and value addition the new product line shall bring into the firms existing market. Most importantly, when an organization introduces new products, they must seek to solve the problems it has been facing. A small-sized firm like this one, may be was not given much attention by its clients due to its low output. You know, there is no way a small-medium sized firm like this would offer the market a large output with the small resources it has. In this situation, the firm risks rendered non-competitive by the giant businesses that are enjoying economies of scale. As a result, the new product should seek to address how it is going to increase the competitiveness of the firm (Nabben, 2014. P.21). This section should also address the barriers to entry that a new product is going to create. For example, there is a need to acquire patent, or a license for the new product line. Businesses run in a regulated legal environment, and there is no way a firm can start the production of such a new product without the authorization of the government or relevant authority. Also, the manufacturing process of the new product should also be explained. In essence, visual aid would help the employees have the understanding of what the new product would look like, and visualize it before the firm starts producing it. Company Progress/ status This section aims at building the confidence of the investors. In this case, there is need to establish a good relationship with the big client, and their entire human resource. The presentation would concentrate on the expertise of management and staff. The management teams role in the new product line should be discussed thoroughly, and their competencies should be related to the quality products the firm is supplying to the market. You know, the decision making of the company lies in the hands of the management team, and if the firm has competent management the big client of the firm received would have confidence in the agreement signed and how their working relationship would be a win-win situation. The customer relations should also be an issue of concern. A firm that fosters good customer relations is likely to benefit from it. Therefore, the presentation would explain how the firm is committed to serving all clients, at least to meet their satisfaction. Further, the strategic partnership established with the big client should explain in a such a way the employees feel that the partnership is for their interest as well. Consequently, the employees would feel that they are the ones that most matter to the organization. However, the product development status should also be presented to prove to the audience and other potential investors that indeed the company has the capacity produce a high-quality brand for its clients as it seeks to grow further (Schaefer Brashear, 1992. P.2). All in all, the speaker should know that building a good working relationship with the investors or clients would attract, more investment to them, and increase the firms market share. The Market On this step, the presentation should focus on how the market for the firm is. It would describe the size of the market, trends, and maturity. The presenter, in this case, must have detailed data that represent the current market for the products of the company. The analysis of the trends would help employees know how the firm is performing in the market. If the performance of the market is steady, it suggests that the firm still has the possibility of making more fortunes from its market. The market maturity for the firm, also confirms has it has gained a competitive advantage in the market (Schaefer Brashear, 1992. P.2). Further, the market trends shall discuss how customers are changing their taste and preference for the laptops whose cases the firm produces. Also, the market trend shall focus on the types of laptop cases the customers are developing their interests in. You know, when buying a laptop one does not just consider the software features, one has to find its hardware f eatures as well, and if the cases are poorly designed potential clients would consider not purchasing them. Most fundamentally, the tablet cases should be able to meet the market trends, have room for innovation and improve the employees welfare. The firm should also discuss its market challenges and how it seeks to solve these problems, for instance by becoming more innovative so that laptop manufacturing companies can see the firm as having the ability to offer them the better premium laptop and tablet cases. You know, in this section, the presentation should show that the company can meet all the needs of tablet and laptop manufacturing companies. Therefore, using visual aids, where a power point presentation and a projector would be used shall make the presentation easier (American Society For Training Development, 2008. P. 45). Employing this simple technology in the presentation is easy to use. It cannot breakdown, and in the case of any fault, it can easily be corrected. Preparations for the Product Line Launch This section would focus on the arrangements the firm is putting in place to make the launch a celebratory and impactful. The employees should be fully engaged in this process because they are the people who are going to make the contract with the big client and the new product line of the range of tablet cases succeed. Further, the employees should be informed that the firm is fully committed to taking care of their welfare, and ensure that their rights are fully observed, and thus they should support the launch and implementation of the new product line (Dew,1997. P.3). Summary This would be an imperative aspect of my presentation. It is a stage that would allow me to summarize all that I have been presenting, right from the introduction to the preparations of the launch of the new product line. Therefore, I would briefly revisit the purpose of the presentation, and how the firm the most important points to standing out in designing and manufacturing laptop and tablet cases. Also, the summary would address: the impact of the new product line, the competitive advantage of the firm, intellectual property of the firms products, marketing approach, customers, employees roles on making the new product line strength to the firm, and finally the firms mission. Making the presentation successful With the above structure, it is important to consider some significant details which are likely to make the presentation succeed. First and foremost, building the story is paramount, and that shall start from the introduction (Khan, 2012. P. 1). Making the presentation would give the employees the context of the presentation. This would mean that in every step, I should ensure that my audience understands its relevance. Also, when the audience gets the context of the presentation, they are likely to ask questions where necessary. You know, this is a presentation that seeks the input of the employees. Therefore, they should be allowed to ask questions, rather than imposing things on them. Simplification of graphics- the presentation will employ graphics to help the employees understand some trends, but it should be noted that not all employees can understand the complex market trends and other graphics (Gallo, 2005. P. 28). Therefore, taking an initiative of simplifying the graphics would enable employees to understand my presentation. Hence. Logical sequence- This is a convincing and informing presentation. Hence the presentation should follow a logical sequence that would allow the audience capture every step of the presentation (Khan, 2012. P. 1). This presentation is not a matter of comedy, it should be handled professionally, and every point should be argued out logically so that the employees, can grasp the message being delivered, and encode the same way the presenter is doing. Further, when informing an audience, there is the need to engage them and hook their attention to the presentation. This would again demand that the presenter reasons logically, and not just read directly from the slides which have been projected on a whiteboard. Further, the duration per each section of the presentation should take a short time. The more the speakers concentrates on one aspect, the more employees get bored and stop reasoning. Choosing a proper channel- In a context like this one, as the manager face-to-face delivery is more convincing, engaging and informing (Gallo, 2005. P. 24). Having employees meet at the boardroom where the management team of the firm usually meet, would make employees feel valued and recognized by the firm. Also, presentation like this one would enable the speaker to maintain eye contact with the audience as they exchange ideas about this new product line. When employees engage in a conversational level with me- the manager, they would feel the need to make this project a success. All in all, the business presentation plan has an introduction, body, and conclusion (Silk, 1995. P. 3). The body would discuss the main points of the presentation. The content must be right and delivered in the most logical sequence. The speakers should, therefore, make sure that he understands the substance of the presentation properly to avoid reading directly from the slides what the audience can see and read on their own. The level of communication should be formal, but the language used should not be too technical because it can bore the audience and finally they would not understand the message being delivered (Schaefer Brashear, 1992. P.32). However, there is no standard structure for a business presentation plan, since managers adopt presentation structures that would enable them to deliver conveniently, easily, and effectively. Therefore, I believe that the above outlined structure would allow to me deliver the message of my presentation most efficiently, hence employees w ill support the launch and implementation of the new product line. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a story about a man, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov, who is in a Russian Siberian prison/labor camp for expression of anti-Stalinistic ideas. The story describes the events of a single day in this man's life and his struggle to survive. I feel that the main theme of this book is survival. However, Ivan shows the reader that survival on your own isn't always possible. You can only provide so much for yourself on your own. People must work as a team, helping one another, in order to get things accomplished, overcome challenges, and survive. Shukhov withstands the conditions of the camp while it would be easy to give in to despair (Des Pres 49). When he arrived in the camp, Ivan realized that it would be hard to survive the environment. Little food was given and the prisoners only received what they needed to stay alive. They were treated as though they weren't human. Cognizant that it would be necessary to work with others in order to survive, Ivan spends some of his time daily doing things to help others. Through the good deeds that Ivan accomplishes, he earns the respect of the other prisoners and is sometimes rewarded with extra food. He does simple things like laying out other prisoner's shoes for them or bringing some of them their food at a meal. One time, Ivan waits in line to get Tsezar his parcel. Tsezar is a rich prisoner who works little or not at all and talks about the luxuries outside of the prison. When Ivan returns, he asks Tsezar if he can bring dinner to him. Tsezar instead allows Ivan to have his dinner. Shukhov helps Tsezar out an awful lot, and he is rewarded almost each and every time with a piece of food or something from Tsezar's parcel. Every little bit helped. Everyone does what he can to benefit the 104th squad (Ivan's squad, led by Tiurin) as a whole. One time, Ivan notices that the cook had made a mistake, and gave the squad the wrong number of rations. When he informs the cook of this error, the squad's rations were corrected and Ivan received some extra food. Also, an effort was made by Tiurin to prevent the squad from working in the so-called Socialist Way of Life settlement in which the 104th would have to work outside in the freezing cold, rather than in the less frigid temperature that they were already used to at the construction site. When the group went out to work, they all put in their best effort. Because it is cold at the building they are working, Ivan and Kilgas (both masons) find a piece of roofing felt and use it as insulation to help keep the 104th warm. The harder that they work, the more food they receive. They also stay warm if they work at a steady pace. Through these characters and their situations, he (Solzhenits yn) demonstrates to the reader that sometimes working for the good of the group achieves a more positive result than working for the good of oneself. Through our own efforts, we provide what is in our immediate need. But we aren't all geniuses. We can't possibly do everything on our own. Sometimes we need more than ourselves alone can provide. This is when we must look towards the people around us for support. Ivan lived at time in a country which provided for its citizens only if they gave their part back to it. Only those in the highest echelons of the government would receive the best care, food, and other supplies. Those that made any offense against the country, or did not do their part, were shipped of to Siberia, to a camp similar to Ivan's. Once at the camp, learning to work together with others was their best chance at survival. One such measure is requiring test takers to show a photo ID. If you don't have an appropriate ID with you on test day, you may not be allowed to take the ACT. A photo ID is required to confirm your identity and registration. In the past, there have been issues with cheating- students have taken the ACT for other people. A comparison of tabloid and broadsheet newspapers Essay ? To understand the subject of this essay, I thought it would help to briefly look at the history and background of newspapers, because I believe this gradually influences people’s decisions on buying a paper today. In earlier years, the majority of people buying newspapers were all well educated, middle – class intellectuals. As a result of this many papers actually tended to follow the broadsheet format. Most people that bought a newspaper would have full intention of reading from front to back. Most papers had between four and nine pages with a lot of columns and very small print; there were not many pictures and very little graphics. This was generally because of the lack of technology available to the publishers and their printers. As time progressed, so did the technology that went into the newspapers. With this improvement in technology this enables the publishers to focus on more specific readership. In a newspaper you can find that they can now devote sectors of the newspaper to individual interests, at the same time as having more illustrations and advertisements. We investigated how tabloids and broadsheets have appeared to combine these new ideas, but somehow still have different techniques, writing styles and format. We did this by using interviews and surveys to help us gain the results we wanted. To gain further understanding of the type of people that read tabloid and broadsheet newspapers, the pupils in our class carried out a survey. The principle was to find out if there were any links between our research and the class survey, it helped us gain more knowledge on the time that papers are read during the day and what days they are tended to be read on. When the survey was complete we collected the results to find that there was quite an even spread of readers for both the tabloid paper and the broadsheet paper. Another interesting fact was that mainly broadsheets were read on the weekend rather than the working week. I recognize that this must be because of the size and depth of the broadsheet which becomes a immediate fault of the paper has it makes it very hard for somebody going to work on the train or bus to read a large paper such as ‘The Telegraph’ in such tight compact spaces. Our class also carried interviews with their friends and family to try and find out the reason behind this predilection. In the majority of cases, the time available and the content of the newspaper were concerns. Many people believed that a broadsheet were more detailed and focused on finance and politics, whereas tabloid papers tended to be more light-hearted and entertaining. There were a lot more gossip columnists and many pages devoted to entertainment and celebrities featured in ‘The Sun’. As I expected the size of the newspapers were a big matter into deciding which paper someone would buy. According to the interviewees, broadsheets were understandably an inconvenient size if they were to be read on a coffee brake or a journey as they were just too big. Tabloid papers were popular because of the advantage of there size as they can be read at spare moments during the day and contained a television guide. Personally I tend to read newspapers at the weekend and the members of my family generally make the choice of paper, I enjoy reading a tabloid a lot more than I do a broadsheet because broadsheets cover a large quantity of business and finance and I am not interested in these subjects. I enjoy reading ‘The Sun’ as it contains a lot of sport news and celebrity news. Tabloid papers in my opinion are a lot easier to read as u don’t have to take a lot of time reading each article like you do in the broadsheet newspapers. Before we actually started to examine individual articles, we made some general assertions concerning the papers contents. We all noticed that there were a surprisingly large amount of adverts in the broadsheet newspaper, which included a completely covered double-page spread on just adverts. A â€Å"British Airways† advert, covered a page of the â€Å"Daily Telegraph† the size made it eye-catching and very effective to the reader. For further exploration we compared two articles, which at the time were concerning the situation in Saudi Arabia. The first article was featured in â€Å"The Sun†, entitled, â€Å"Saudi Aid†. The second article was found in â€Å"The Daily Telegraph† entitled, â€Å"Arab states back Bush over Iraq†. My immediate observation was the difference and contrast in headlines. The tabloid headline was much shorter than that of the broadsheet, therefore the information given was. â€Å"Saudi Aid† gave the reader a suggestion of the articles content, but did not make any kind of effort to enhance on the subject. On the other hand â€Å"The Telegraph† was more informative and had a much more detailed headline, â€Å"Arab states back Bush over Iraq†. This headline refers to a specific incident which is very straight forward it also includes one of the most well known names in the world, this is a clever way of using someone’s name involved in the issue to draw in the reader the also tone suggests controversy. â€Å"The Sun† followed its brief headline with a more detailed summary, giving us further amplification on the subject. â€Å"The Telegraph† on the other hand had a sub headline of â€Å"Way cleared for countdown to war†. Again the focus of the piece was narrowed down to ass impact on their first headline. The sub headline included and extremely emotive phrase, â€Å"Countdown to War†. This gives no definite answer to the question most people were asking themselves at the time, it just leaves the possibility that it could happen in the future if the situation deteriorates. â€Å"The Sun† also included a sub headline in its article. â€Å"Saudis to aid attack on Iraq† again this repeats the word ‘aid’ from the headline but this time expanding on the content of the article. The reporter actually uses rhyme, which increases the articles appeal, because it becomes captivating and memorable. In continuing to study the format of the article, I noticed that the front pages of both pieces were very different. â€Å"The Telegraph’s† report was split into four columns, with an enlarged quote dividing the second column. In this article there was clearly more writing, and whilst I could perceive a summary, it was not highlighted in any way, like â€Å"The Sun’s† report, which had a summary in bold type and a sub heading of ‘Weapons’ halfway through the first column, such use of a sub headline created drama and tension. The summary uses colloquial language, and emotive writing such as ‘the Saudis fear they will never be safe while Saddam rules’. With added patriotism, the summary lures the reader to read on through the article, to reach the main point of the piece. Unlike the broadsheet article, there was a picture featured in the tabloid newspaper. The picture was of Jack Straw and by adding a picture the information in the article is authentic and may entice the reader to look more closely at the piece, and maybe value the reporter’s opinion more. Another creative effect is â€Å"The Suns† use of italics. By placing a chosen phrase or paragraph in italics, the reader’s attention is drawn to the chosen area, showing that the specific phrase is important, and so the reader should pay attention to it. The general tone of † the suns† article is informal throughout the piece. The reporter remains biased and doesn’t believe that the possibility of war may be resolved. The piece in â€Å"The Telegraph† takes an objective style and presents both sides of the argument, and continually stating that there is no definite war. The miscellany in reporting styles also includes the use of more formal language with words such as ‘repercussions’. I would presume that the readers of a broadsheet newspaper are more middle-class. This is a generalisation but that the fact that there is more business, finance and culture in the broadsheet newspaper. There is one similarity between the articles it is that they both include the national security adviser â€Å"Conddeezza Rice†. Overall the broadsheet newspaper includes more concept language and is rather informal, whilst the tabloid newspaper has short headlines with a catchy theme to it, instead of a more sophisticated and simple headlines brought to us by the broadsheet newspapers. Kant vs. Kierkegaard Essay I also believe that the issue that I am discussing is deep, and therefore interesting. Its weaknesses would be its lack of quotes. The difficulty with this paper was trying to find the idea in the first place. It took me a lot of time to find deep similarities and differences between the two. It also took me some time to figure out how I would lay the essay out and how I would flesh the essay out. As this paper is not superficial, I found myself finding new ideas and problem as time passed. This gave me another problem as I always had to rethink and re-edit. The goals for my next paper are to include more quotes, as my papers lack evidence. My other goals are to carry on writing interesting and thought provoking papers. I aim to try to make my essays as clear as possible, as tackling deep issues can sometimes make the writing quite convoluted. Love of Duty vs. Love of Choice In their essays ‘Lectures on Ethics Friendship’ and ‘Works of Love – Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor’, respectively, Kant and Kierkegaard both appear as idealists: They each portray a utopia in which friendship is universal. Kant believes that perfection can be achieved if people put love of mankind before love of oneself, and Kierkegaard believes that perfection can be achieved if you love everyone as if they were your neighbor. Ironically, both also contradict themselves: Kant contradicts his other idea that one will never be able to achieve the ideal of friendship, where partners share everything with each other. While Kierkegaard contradicts himself by saying a true Christian is completely selfless. This is a contradiction, as someone who is selfless cannot have a choice (free will), but as rational humans we do have a choice. Given these parallels, are these two thinkers ultimately offering us the same sense of utopia? No – in fact, Kant is a realist who uses a scientific approach to figure out what it means to be a friend, whereas Kierkegaard is a religious thinker who applies his religious morality on people. Their utopias look very similar on the surface, but their underlying methods to reach them are vastly different. Both Kant and Kierkegaard come from two very different backgrounds. Kant was born in Prussia, and was interested in physics and mathematics. He didn’t have a positive view of religion was also asked to stop teaching Theology at the University of Konigsberg by the government as he allegedly ‘misrepresented’ the principles of Christianity. This shows that Kant was a thinker independent of religion. Kant believed that â€Å"mankind’s final coming of age,† was â€Å"the emancipation of the human consciousness from an immature state of ignorance and error. † This is the opposite of Kierkegaard, as he was a devout Christian. Kierkegaard tried to incorporate religion (Christian morality) with reason. This is where he comes up with his idea of ‘loving thy neighbor’. Whereas Kierkegaard comes from a position that his way is the ‘right’ way, as it was mandated from God, Kant comes from a position which is influenced by Rousseau and Aristotle, in fact Kant’s idea of man having self-love and love for humanity comes straight from Rousseau’s book ‘The Discourse on the Origin of Inequality’. There is also a deeper difference: Kierkegaard’s religious morality implies duty, whereas Kant’s view on friendship implies choice. Choice lies at the heart of Kant’s philosophy. He says that man has two basic instincts: self-love and love for humanity (pity). These two instincts conflict with each other and only one can win. Kant believes that in an ideal world, all people would put love for humanity before self-love. This would create a world where love is reciprocated, and therefore man does not have to worry about losing his happiness. In essence, Kant’s version of a utopia is where man chooses to love humanity. This is vastly different to Kierkegaard’s version, where man has no choice, as it is his moral duty to love everyone as if they were his neighbor. Kierkegaard does acknowledge Kant in a way, by distinguishing between earthly love and spiritual love. He says earthly love (Kant’s type of love) is the exact opposite of spiritual love. He argues that a ‘poet’ (Kant) is absolutely right in saying that earthly love cannot be commanded. Kierkegaard believes that Christian love is better as it is ‘completely selfless’. For Kierkegaard, â€Å"Christian love teaches love to all men, unconditionally all. Just as unconditionally and strongly as earthly love tends towards the idea of there being but one single object of love, equally unconditionally and strongly Christian love tends in the opposite direction. If a man with respect to Christian love wishes to make an exception in the case of one man whom he does not wish to love, then such love is not ‘also Christian love,’ but it is unconditionally not Christian love. † (41) Kierkegaard also believes that it is quite liberating to be forced to love. As if the absence of choice creates peace. He believes that â€Å"it is encouraging in your relation to a distinguished man, that in him you must love your neighbor; it is humbling in relation to the inferior, that you do not have to love the inferior on him, but must love your neighbor; it is a saving grace if you do it, for you must do it† (50). Thus the difference between earthly and spiritual love is that earthly love is a choice and spiritual love is a command from God. Both Kierkegaard and Kant come to different conclusions because in their writing, their focus is on separate ideas. Kant, being a man of reason primarily, approaches his philosophy in a scientific manner. To explain, he breaks one thing into smaller things. Kant makes observations based on what he sees, hears, tastes, smells, and feels (like his three types of friendships). However, he does also make some conceptual assumptions (discussed earlier) such as his idea of putting love of humanity before self-love will cause reciprocation of friendship. Unlike Kierkegaard, Kant does not focus on religion as it is unnecessary for someone who is only interested in empirical observations. Kierkegaard however is not concerned with empirical observation, as he believes that there is something higher and more important i. e. Christianity. Kierkegaard concentrates more on morality and what he believes is right, instead of focusing on what is actually there. Kierkegaard doesn’t even talk about friendship in his writing. This shows that he places much more importance on what his religion says is right instead of trying to observe and deconstruct what friendship is. But the only way to leave the place of loneliness was to have a person you loves you for who you are, the career never gave that to them. The sun went down and the shadows scrawled in through the windows like a lion crawling for its prey. Night time was also the time when most dreamt about their real parents. They were regretting there life, like it was their fault they're in a cave of loneliness. The children's cry echoed through the empty house and soul. The child's face started to cry as it did not receive what it needs.
